What is Laser Skin Resurfacing?

Laser skin resurfacing uses advanced laser technology to improve skin texture, tone, and appearance by removing damaged outer layers of skin and stimulating collagen production. It effectively treats:

Common Concerns:

  • Wrinkles and fine lines (around eyes, mouth, forehead)
  • Sun damage and age spots
  • Acne scars and surgical scars
  • Uneven skin tone and texture
  • Large pores
  • Melasma and hyperpigmentation
  • Precancerous lesions (actinic keratosis)

Types of Laser Resurfacing:

Ablative Lasers (remove outer skin layers):

  • CO2 Laser: Most aggressive, dramatic results, longer downtime (7-14 days)
  • Erbium Laser: Less aggressive, faster healing (5-7 days)

Non-Ablative Lasers (heat underlying skin without removing surface):

  • Fraxel: Fractional laser, minimal downtime (2-3 days)
  • IPL (Intense Pulsed Light): Treats pigmentation, minimal downtime

Dr Maresky selects the appropriate laser type and intensity based on your skin concerns, skin type, and desired downtime.

Frequently Asked Questions

12 Questions

Which laser is best for me?

It depends on your skin concerns, skin type, and desired downtime. CO2 laser provides most dramatic results but requires 7-14 days downtime. Fraxel provides good results with minimal downtime (2-3 days). Dr Maresky recommends the best option during consultation.

How painful is laser resurfacing?

Non-ablative lasers cause mild discomfort (tingling, heat) during treatment. Ablative lasers are more uncomfortable but anesthesia is used. Post-treatment discomfort ranges from mild (non-ablative) to moderate (ablative), managed with medication.

How long is the downtime?

Non-ablative (Fraxel, IPL): 1-3 days of redness, can wear makeup after 24 hours. Ablative (CO2, Erbium): 7-14 days of significant redness, peeling, and social downtime. Plan accordingly.

Can I wear makeup after laser resurfacing?

Non-ablative: Usually after 24 hours. Ablative: Not until 7-10 days when skin has re-epithelialized. Use mineral-based makeup when cleared by Dr Maresky.

How many treatments do I need?

Ablative lasers typically require 1 treatment for dramatic results. Non-ablative lasers usually require 3-5 treatments spaced 4-6 weeks apart for optimal results. Dr Maresky creates a personalized treatment plan.

Can laser resurfacing remove deep wrinkles?

Laser resurfacing can significantly improve deep wrinkles but may not remove them completely. Very deep wrinkles may require surgical facelift for best results. Laser can be combined with surgery.

Is laser resurfacing safe for dark skin?

Certain lasers (Nd:YAG, Fraxel) are safe for darker skin tones, but ablative lasers (CO2) carry higher risk of pigmentation changes. Dr Maresky assesses your skin type and recommends appropriate treatment.

When can I return to work?

Non-ablative: 1-2 days (can wear makeup). Ablative: 7-14 days (significant redness and peeling). Plan your treatment around your schedule.

Will laser resurfacing prevent future wrinkles?

Laser resurfacing stimulates collagen production which provides ongoing improvement, but it doesn't prevent aging. Proper skincare, sun protection, and healthy lifestyle help maintain results.

Can I combine laser resurfacing with other procedures?

Yes! Laser is often combined with Botox, fillers, facelift, or other procedures for comprehensive rejuvenation. Dr Maresky discusses safe combinations during consultation.

How long do results last?

Results last several years with proper sun protection and skincare. However, aging continues, so some patients choose maintenance treatments every 1-2 years to sustain results.

What's the most important aftercare step?

Sun protection! Your new skin is extremely sensitive to UV damage. Use SPF 50+ daily, wear hats, and avoid sun exposure for at least 3 months after treatment. This is critical for preventing complications and maintaining results.
