What is Chemical Peels (Chemexfoliation)?

A chemical peel is a technique whereby a chemical solution is applied to the skin that causes it to exfoliate and eventually peel off. This technique is commonly used on skin on the face, neck, and hands and is very effective in reducing signs of aging, scarring and sun damage.

The Procedure

During a chemical peel, a chemical solution is applied to your skin, which makes the skin blister and peel off. This solution works to exfoliate the skin and boost collagen production for firmer, smoother looking skin.

Recovery & Aftercare

The recovery time varies from patient to patient and will depend largely on what type of chemical peel is used. Flaking skin, irritation, and peeling usually occur for a few days after light peels. It can take up to six weeks for skin to return to its normal appearance following a medium or deep chemical peel.

Expected Results

Chemical peels are very effective in reducing signs of aging, scarring and sun damage, resulting in smoother, more youthful-looking skin.

Who is a good candidate for chemical peels?

Generally, the ideal candidate for a chemical peel is someone who is light-haired and fair skinned. The procedure does not generally work well on dark-skinned patients and is not recommend for patients who are nursing or pregnant, have taken Accutane in the last six months, or have eczema or rosacea.

What types of chemical peels are available?

There are three main types: light/superficial peels for mild skin issues, medium peels for moderate wrinkles and pigmentation, and deep peels for severe sun damage and deep wrinkles. Dr Maresky will recommend the appropriate type during consultation.

How long does a chemical peel procedure take?

Light chemical peels typically take 15-30 minutes, medium peels take 30-60 minutes, and deep peels can take 60-90 minutes depending on the treatment area.

How many sessions will I need?

Light peels may require multiple sessions (4-6 treatments) spaced a few weeks apart. Medium and deep peels usually require only one session but deliver more dramatic results.

When can I return to work after a chemical peel?

After a light peel, you can typically return to work immediately or the next day. Medium peels may require 5-7 days off, while deep peels may need 2-3 weeks recovery time.

Can chemical peels be combined with other treatments?

Yes, chemical peels can be combined with other non-surgical treatments like microdermabrasion, laser therapy, or dermal fillers for comprehensive facial rejuvenation. Dr Maresky will create a customized treatment plan.
